When Martin Van Buren reached the Capitol building for his inauguration in 1837, a crowd of twenty thousand cheered. But there could be no doubt that the object of the crowd's affection was Van Buren's escort, "Old Hickory", the outgoing president, Andrew Jackson. Senator Thomas Hart Benton said it was the only time "the rising sun was eclipsed by the setting sun."
